A recent advertisement by Titan Group’s Tanishq Jewellery received backlash on the Internet because it featured an interfaith married couple.

More than 15,000 people took to Twitter to trend #Boycott Tanishq and calling for a ban on the advert, as it ‘went against Indian values’. The commercial shows a Muslim family preparing for the baby shower of their Hindu daughter-in-law. This seemingly simple and sweet commercial promoted ‘love jihad’, according to Right Wing Twitter and went against everything Indian traditions stood for, forcing the brand to withdraw the commercial.

Kalyaan Jewellers banked upon the raging controversy and released a new ad poster for their brand, featuring the celebrity brand ambassadors: The Bachchan family.

The ad shows the Bachchan family, including Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan, dressed to the nines, posing with the tree that they got Aishwarya married to because she was apparently Manglik, something that is not desirable in a Hindu daughter-in-law.

“We wanted to capture the true Indian values that most people believe in and fight for everyday,” says a representative from the brand, “This is why we decided to use this opportunity to highlight the beauty in our customs. We lucked out that our brand ambassadors align so well with these values.”

The visual of the family posing with Aishwarya’s tree husband, is accompanied by a tagline that reads ‘The only kind of marriage values Indians believe in…’

The advertisement has largely been received with praise, with many lauding it as ‘a true portrayal for what Hindu customs stand for’, and also ‘At least it’s not a Muslim’…
